Combining American and Canadian Families – Butter Tart Recipe

What happens when you combine America and Canadian family members?

You get TWICE the celebrations! Our blending of the two countries began in 1962 when my Canadian Mom married my American Dad. They had 3 kids all born in the US, but raised in Canada since we were young. I went on to have 3 Canadian kids then 10 years ago married Mark, an America. One of my kids (college aged) remained in Canada and now has 2 Canadian born children. My other two (teenagers then) moved with me to southern Louisiana. Now both are adults and one is married to an American with our American born grandchild.

Most of my life July 1st was spent at Sauble Beach or any of the other stunning fresh water lakes in Ontario. Typically for us, Canada Day consisted of bathing suits, sunburns, hotdogs, hamburgers, strawberry shortcake and butter tarts. Like every Canadian holiday, I miss my family and friends but we keep the festivities alive and always have a fresh batch of butter tarts for dessert!

My earliest 4th of July memory was spent with my Grandma watching fireworks at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California and we’ve attended picnics and hosted many 4th of July events.

BUT my all-time favorite 4th of July will always be in 2008, the day I married Mark Chauvin! Everyone still teases him that while the rest of the country celebrated Independence, Mark chose to lose his!!

In preparation for today’s Canada Day celebrations, I embroidered ‘Eh Team’ t-shirts for Logan, Savannah, as well as their Uncle Luke, who is visiting family in Ontario. Kaity has 4th of July popsicle shirt.
